Welcome to your easy guide to SEO for real estate agents! SEO (or Search Engine Optimization) is essentially how you get Google (and other search engines) to notice your website and list it in search results. If you're not familiar with SEO yet, don’t worry – it's not as complicated as it sounds, and it's crucial for helping people find you online.
Think about it: How often do you go past the first page of Google results? Almost never, right? That’s why the goal is to get your site ranking on page one. It takes time and effort, but with the right strategy, you’ll see results.
Let’s dive into some basic tips on SEO for realtors that can help boost your online visibility and generate leads.
Google is constantly tweaking its algorithm to offer users the best, most relevant search results. To get your real estate site recognized by Google, the search engine looks at factors like:
Content (the keywords you use, how readable your site is, etc.)
Technical Quality (how fast your page loads, if it’s mobile-friendly)
Back-links (links from other reputable sites that act as endorsements)
You don’t need to master every aspect of SEO all at once, but you should focus on the basics to get started.
Having just a few standard pages on your site (Home, About, Contact, etc.) won’t give Google much to work with. You need more content for Google to recognize, and that's where blogging comes in.
Regularly publishing blog posts is one of the best ways to boost your SEO. If you don't have the time to blog, we've got you covered. Everett Marketing Agency offers ghost writing for real estate agents. We blog on your behalf and publish to your real estate website. If you don't have a real estate website with blogging capabilities check out our favorite real estate website platform HERE. Having a website with a blog to share valuable content is one of the best ways to rank on search engines.
When creating new content, it’s crucial to choose the right keywords. These are the words and phrases you want your site to be found for. For example, a lot of agents might think to use “real estate” or “Realtor.” The problem is, those keywords have massive competition. Going head-to-head with real estate giants like Realtor.com isn’t going to help your SEO.
Instead, focus on more niche keywords with less competition. You can use Google’s Keyword Planner to find popular but underused keywords that can give your website a better shot at ranking higher.
Here’s how I use the Google Keyword Planner:
Pick a topic. I usually plan out topics in advance, so I don’t have to scramble every week to come up with ideas.
Search for relevant keywords. After choosing a topic, head over to Google’s Keyword Planner and type in your general topic (e.g., “real estate SEO”). Look for keywords that have good search volume but low competition – this is your sweet spot.
Tailor your keywords. Use phrases that are specific to your area. For example, “real estate in [city name]” is going to be more effective than just “real estate.”
One of the biggest SEO mistakes agents make is not posting regularly. Google likes fresh content, so the more consistently you post, the better chance you have of ranking higher. Aim for at least one post a week. Don’t worry if writing isn’t your strong suit; you can always delegate the task by hiring a real estate content writer like us.
Back-links are simply links from other websites that point back to yours, and they’re crucial for SEO. Quality back-links from trusted websites can boost your credibility with Google, and in turn, your rankings. Try reaching out to fellow agents, offering guest posts, or even cold-emailing website owners to suggest they link to your content.
Your website needs to be fast and mobile-friendly. Visitors are more likely to leave your site if it takes longer than a few seconds to load or if it doesn’t display well on a smartphone. If you're building a new site, use a theme that’s optimized for speed and mobile like Lofty. Already have a site? Use a website audit tool to see where you can make improvements or give us a call and we would be happy to audit your site for you.
Before you move on with your day, why not get a quick win? Pick one blog post or webpage and apply some of these SEO tips. Whether you’re updating an old post or writing something new, you’re taking steps toward improving your rankings and growing your online presence. Let Google do its thing, and over time, you’ll see the results. Remember, writing blogs is a marathon not a sprint. If you need help getting to the finish line, we are here!
